Mon, August 8, 2005 - 9:10 AMLots of fun in this city. It really doesn't sleep. Tons of clubs and restaurants. I have been here for months and still have more to try. My first tip to you: Watch out when crossing the street. In some cities, the taxis and such will actually stop if you step into the crosswalk. Here, they will hit you. Seen it. Watch how the locals do it and be careful! -

Mon, August 8, 2005 - 6:06 PMYeah, i saw an old man on a scooter get knocked down by a bus on my way to work yesterday. I'd already noticed the lack of attention to traffic signals by pretty much everyone.
Any other tips?
Can i brush my teeth with the tapwater, or will that give me dysentery or something nasty? -

Wed, August 10, 2005 - 7:54 AMAvoid the tap water and ice in your drinks for a few weeks. I still brush my teeth with bottled water. I can now handle ice in my drink after a month of slow adjustment. Some people never get the ice. Avoid fruits and vegetables with their skin on or that have been washed in tap water. They say to only eat it boiled, cooked, or peeled. Salads here are just not that great of an idea. Avoid food in the little vendor stands, too risky. -

There's nowhere to eat in my neighborhood other than streetstands, but they fry everything nice and hot.
I think the baozi were getting to me a bit at first, but things have settled down now.
I don't think i've been served an iced drink yet, other than at some silly American-style bar tonight.
Any other words of wisdom? -

Never pay more than 50% of the asking price and remember that there are always more of the same just down the street.
See the rest of China on the weekends. Every city is so different, so take some trains, planes, and automobiles and get out of Shanghai!
